The University of California Riverside is a public university that is one of ten campuses of the University of California. It is a large university situated on 1200 acres of land in the beautiful city of Riverside. There are nearly 20,000 students, 15,000 of which are undergraduates.

The city of Riverside has a population of around 300,000 people and is situated in the south of California. It is the twelfth largest city in the state. The city is best known as the birth place of the Californian citrus industry. There is plenty to do in Riverside and it is a fantastic place for students to live and learn. The city offers everything from cinemas and large shopping malls through to art galleries and nightclubs.

The university is one of the top ranked in the country, and the Washington Monthly ranked the university 15th in the USA in terms of research achievement and community service. It is also the third most ethnically diverse university in the country. It is one of the most popular universities for ethnic minority students as they offer lots of programs and incentives for them.

The university student body consists of 34% Asian/American Asian students, 25.3% Chicano and Latino, and 19.3% Caucasian - with other nationalities making up the rest.

The university is situated at an elevation of around 1450 feet and lies at the foothills of the Box Spring Mountain. There is nice landscaping throughout the campus and plenty of places to relax and enjoy the surrounds between study.

There are plenty of accommodation and housing options at the university, with three main halls of residence around the campus. Different halls have been made to suit the differing needs of their diverse student body. For example they have a specific hall for Hispanic students and for African students. They also have the USA’s first gender-neutral residence hall.

The university newspaper is called the Highlander and is published bi-weekly. Since 2001 it has received funding from the university to help cover the running and printing costs of the paper.

The university also organizes a wide range of activities for their students. The Associated Students Program Board has 14 members and organizes concerts, films, cultural events and more throughout the year. Some of the most popular events include the Block Party Concert, Student Film Festival and Spring Splash. Most of the big events are held at The Barn. Many famous performers have played here over the years including Radiohead and No Doubt. It has recently been developed into a restaurant but there are still a number of concerts and events held here.

There are 80 different bachelor degree programs at the university, and 46 masters programs. These are offered over six different colleges - College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences; College of Natural and Agricultural Science; Marian and Rosemary Bourns College of Engineering; A. Gary Anderson Graduate School of Management; the Graduate School of Education; and the Division of Biomedical Sciences. The average grade score needed for entry into the university is 3.59, with a minimum of 3.0 required for entry.

Athletics at the University of California Riverside are very popular and successful. There are 17 different sports on offer, including women’s and men’s soccer, basketball, volleyball, baseball, golf and tennis to name a few. The sports teams are called the Riverside Highlanders, and their 17 different teams compete at the NCAA Division 1 competition. This is the highest level of intercollegiate sports in the USA. Their most successful teams have been baseball, women’s basketball, women’s soccer, men’s golf, men’s and women’s cross country and men’s and women’s track and field.

There are plenty of great things to do on campus at the University of California Riverside, including weekly free concerts on the lawn by the Bell Tower every Wednesday. There are also over 270 different student organizations that you can join ranging from paintball through to Spanish-speaking clubs. One of the benefits of the University of California are the small class sizes and more personal learning experience, which has helped make the percentage of students finishing their bachelor degree within four years one of the highest in the country.
